Background of the Study

Community-based neonatal care interventions play a crucial role in reducing neonatal mortality, particularly in rural and underserved areas where access to healthcare facilities is limited. These interventions include home visits by trained community health workers (CHWs), health education for mothers, promotion of essential newborn care (ENC) practices, and referrals for high-risk cases (WHO, 2024). In Katsina State, neonatal mortality remains high due to poor healthcare access, harmful traditional practices, and low maternal education levels. This study evaluates the effectiveness of community-based neonatal care interventions in improving newborn health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to reduce neonatal mortality in Nigeria, many rural areas, including Katsina State, still experience high infant deaths due to preventable causes such as infections, hypothermia, and birth complications. Community-based interventions have been proposed as a solution, but their effectiveness and implementation in Katsina State remain underexplored. Assessing the success and challenges of these interventions is crucial for improving neonatal survival rates.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the effectiveness of community-based neonatal care interventions in reducing neonatal mortality.

2. To examine the role of community health workers in promoting newborn care practices.

3. To identify barriers to the successful implementation of community-based neonatal care programs.

Research Questions

1. How effective are community-based neonatal care interventions in reducing neonatal mortality in Katsina State?

2. What role do community health workers play in promoting neonatal care?

3. What are the key challenges in implementing community-based neonatal care interventions?

Research Hypotheses

1. Community-based neonatal care interventions significantly reduce neonatal mortality rates.

2. The involvement of trained community health workers improves essential newborn care practices.

3. Socioeconomic and cultural barriers limit the effectiveness of community-based neonatal care interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on rural and semi-urban communities in Katsina State where community-based neonatal care programs are implemented. Limitations may include difficulty in tracking newborn health outcomes over time and variations in program implementation across different communities.

Definitions of Terms

• Community-Based Neonatal Care: Interventions provided at the community level to improve newborn survival, including home visits, maternal education, and early referrals.

• Essential Newborn Care (ENC): A set of interventions that promote newborn survival, such as immediate breastfeeding, thermal care, and hygienic umbilical cord care.
